A heat dome over the central and eastern United States produced record highs including 105 F in Newark and 104 F at LaGuardia Airport, coinciding with at least 19 suspected heat-related deaths in New Jersey. Severe storms caused power outages affecting nearly one million customers. Most deaths occurred in central and northern New Jersey, with victims found in homes without air conditioning as well as outdoors.
