A glacier collapse on August 26, 2026, produced a debris flow that destroyed a border port complex and caused hundreds of deaths with thousands reported missing. Satellite data showed a lake on the Purepu Tsangpo River that reached 99,000 square meters before shrinking by 21,000 square meters by August 29. Chinese authorities stated the immediate burst threat had eased as water drained naturally and parts of the lake bed became visible.
