A glacier section near Langtang Lirung collapsed last week relative to September 1, sending debris and water down the Trishuli River and producing a reported death toll above 1,000 according to Al-Monitor. Researchers had previously identified 47 potentially dangerous glacial lakes in Nepal, China, and India, with estimates indicating a higher actual number and millions of people at risk. UNDP regional director Kanni Wignaraja stated that technology cannot move fast enough to prevent losses along these river systems.
