On Thursday the French National Assembly approved a bill repealing the Code Noir, a set of 17th- and 18th-century royal edicts regulating slavery in French colonies. The measure, introduced by Guadeloupe lawmaker Max Mathiasin, passed without opposition despite the fact that slavery itself had been abolished in 1848. The repeal addresses statutes that had never been formally struck from the books after abolition.
