Ashis Banerjee, a five-time MLA and former deputy speaker of the West Bengal assembly, was found dead on Sunday morning at a Trinamool Congress office in Rampurhat, Birbhum district. A purported suicide note was recovered and the body was sent for post-mortem examination, though circumstances remain unclear. Banerjee had lost his assembly seat and resigned from a party district role earlier in the year.
