Massive floods struck a border area between Nepal and China, resulting in at least 273 deaths and more than 1,300 people missing, with over 100 of the missing on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and at least 25 Canadians among the missing. The disaster displaced hundreds across the Himalayan region. Mount Kailash, a peak rising more than 6,400 metres near Lake Manasarovar, holds sacred significance for Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Tibetan Bon tradition.
