Anthropic reached a $1.5 billion settlement with authors over the use of a pirated book library for AI training, with a federal judge granting preliminary approval. The agreement covers more than 91 percent of affected authors and publishers at roughly $3,000 per book. A separate ruling held that training AI on lawfully published material constitutes fair use.
