On August 31 the European Commission designated ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox as very large online platforms after each reported more than 45 million monthly active users in the EU. The designations require the services to comply within four months with additional obligations under the Digital Services Act, including assessments of systemic risks related to illegal content, minors, mental and physical well-being, fundamental rights, electoral processes, and public security. The Commission also qualified ChatGPT as a search engine for regulatory purposes.
