Egypt absorbed more than one million Sudanese refugees following the 2023 outbreak of civil war in Sudan. An 18-year-old high-school student, Al-Nazir Al-Sadig, died of pneumonia after spending more than three weeks in a Cairo jail. Egyptian authorities have deported more than 5,500 people since November, with plain-clothes officers detaining thousands using unmarked vehicles.
