At least 12 states have reported cyberattacks on water systems that may involve Iran-backed actors, according to federal sources. The U.S. maintains more than 144,000 public water systems, including roughly 50,000 community systems serving residents year-round. Experts from the American Water Works Association and Purdue University have commented on infrastructure vulnerabilities.
