Framing Analysis
The first round of Colombia's presidential election occurred on May 31, 2026, with Abelardo de la Espriella of the Defenders of the Motherland movement receiving 44% of the vote and Iván Cepeda receiving 41% after 99.98% of ballots were counted. No candidate secured an outright majority, sending the contest to a June runoff. Cepeda, a progressive senator and ally of outgoing President Gustavo Petro, stated that further clarification from vote-counting commissions was required before additional comment.
