Romania’s Cernavoda plant, the country’s only nuclear facility and usual source of one-fifth of national electricity, shut down its second reactor on August 13 after an earlier July closure of the first unit. Both outages stem from record-low water levels in the Danube River, which supplies cooling water. The government allocated over 2 million euros for river modifications and stated that wind power plus imports would cover supply needs.
