The Union government has asked the Supreme Court to consolidate challenges to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026, currently pending in at least four High Courts. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared before Chief Justice Surya Kant on May 27, 2026, requesting expedited listing of the transfer petitions. The amendment is contested for removing self-identification provisions recognized in the 2014 NALSA judgment.
