Assembly Bill 2624, introduced by Assemblymember Mia Bonta in February and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Aug. 21, creates privacy protections for immigration support service providers. Republican Assemblymember Carl DeMaio labeled the measure the “Stop Nick Shirley Act” and announced plans to challenge it in court. A rally at the state Capitol drew hundreds and resulted in three detentions and one arrest.
