Basavaraj Horatti resigned as Chairperson of the Karnataka Legislative Council after the Congress party requested his departure, with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar conveying the directive from the party high command. He had planned to step down on August 14 but submitted his resignation on August 7 and will continue as pro-tem Speaker until then. Congress, which holds a majority in the 75-member council, has named Saleem Ahmed as its candidate for the position, with appointment expected on August 14 ahead of the monsoon session starting August 13.
