The Neural Engine first appeared in the 2017 iPhone X with the A11 Bionic chip and was initially used for on-device computer vision tasks including Face ID. Its development drew from Apple's earlier self-driving car research. The company plans to skip certain high-end variants of the upcoming M6 chip, with the M7 expected in the first half of 2027.
