An appellate tribunal under SAFEMA set aside a 2018 Enforcement Directorate penalty order against Lalit Modi and others in a FEMA case linked to the 2009 IPL in South Africa. The ruling followed a 16-year legal process and allows Modi, who has lived outside India for more than a decade, to plan a return by late 2025 or early 2026. The decision partly allowed the appeal against the ED's May 31, 2018 order.
