The American Red Cross has declared a national blood supply shortage, the second such crisis in its 150-year history, after supplies fell approximately 25 percent in one month. The organization, which supplies about 40 percent of U.S. blood, is distributing thousands more units than usual amid summer demand increases and weather-related disruptions. All blood types are needed, particularly O positive.
