Researchers completed the first full reading of a sealed Herculaneum scroll on June 25 using artificial intelligence and high-resolution scans. The scroll, carbonized during the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius, could not be physically opened without damage. The Vesuvius Challenge project plans to release all data, code, and models online and offers a $1 million prize for reading additional scrolls.
