The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals on August 10 allowed more than 3,000 lawsuits alleging addictive platform design by Meta, Google, TikTok, and Snap to proceed, ruling that Section 230 provides a liability defense rather than immunity from suit. A separate multistate trial brought by 29 attorneys general is scheduled to begin August 12. The decision rejected early appeals by the companies on procedural grounds.
