The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the West Bengal assembly election on May 4, 2026, and is set to form its first government there after Suvendu Adhikari defeated incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur. In Tamil Nadu, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician Vijay, won over 100 seats to become the single-largest party but fell short of the 118-seat majority in the 234-seat assembly. BJP retained Assam for a third term, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was re-elected in Puducherry.
